West Shore Evangelical Free Church - 10/29/2008
The rolling terrain of the site and the drainage swale located in the heart of the L-shaped property presented JMB with several challenges. Extensive parking had to be located in close proximity to the building for convenient access. At the same time, adjoining property owners were concerned with the possibility of having large parking lots directly abutting their backyards. Large amounts of off-site stormwater runoff were discharged onto the property at multiple points and had to be safely conveyed through the property.
The solution to these issues was to work with the architect to create a building pad in the middle of the site for the two-level building. Parking lots were positioned adjacent to multiple points of entry around the perimeter of the building for convenient access into the building. A combination bypass swale and underground culvert were designed to convey off-site runoff and discharge from multiple detention basins safely trhough the site. Landscaping and the walking trail were arranged around the perimeter of the building and parking lots to present a "green" view to the adjoining properties and at the two points of entry into the church site. JMB was able to provide a site design that maintains the balance between a user-friendly site for the church and the blend of farming and residential feel of the surrounding neighborhood.
